Review # 1 was written on 2016-09-21 00:00:00 Brian Reardon As a non-academic reader, I found Elizabeth Kolsky particularly approachable. I have only read a little bit about the administrative perils of British rule in late Victorian period when educational and legal institutions had been established and strengthened. As Ms Kolsky concludes in the book, the resistance to British rule came from within the empire rather than from outside. Tactics like laws again miscegenation and transfer of civil-service exam venues to London had to be used to keep natives at bay and avoid conflicts between natives and the British. Ms Kolsky points out evidences that tell us a more detailed story of day-to-day violence and conflicts in colonial India. The story that comes out of it is hardly a story of India - but that of colonialism all over the world and the dilemma that was faced by administrators of the empire - more specifically the likes of Bentick, Macaulay and Curzon who in their own minds, took on the responsibility to improve the lives of everyone within British empire. Although I do wish the book had more data cited for its conclusions, I would highly recommend this work for researchers and amateur readers alike.

Review # 2 was written on 2020-10-15 00:00:00 Alicia Erickson Admito que gostava de ter tido mais tempo para ler e examinar como deve ser este livro. A escrita é fácil de acompanhar, apesar de referir conceitos de direito sobre os quais se deve ter conhecimento prévio. Independentemente disso, é um livro que apresenta casos concretos de violência branca na índia sobre os quais não havia conhecimento prévio, foi interessante de ler sobre eles e descobrir que realmente somos uns merdas, gostei particularmente de como é que o conceito de raça começou a existir e a ser aplicado no mundo. Provavelmente hei-de pegar nele de novo para o ler com mais calma porque o sofrimento de leitura só existiu devido aos prazos.
