I was tentative and worried to re-open and re-read this book. I first read it when I was 25. It seemed the coolest, cleverest and most courageous book I had ever read. All these years later - when so much has happened to both the writer and the reader - I was reticent. Also, so many scholars of socio-legal studies, criminology and jurisprudence claim this book as the one that changed their life, career and approach to the law. How has it moved through time? Brilliantly. It is Kraftwerk-cold as it "dances on the edge" of disciplines. The aloof dis/engagement with Foucault is started to appear in Steve's work, and the deeply complex engagements with Lyotard in particular pepper this monograph. But it is the writing style that is so remarkable. This book follows his early football books and The End-of-the-Century Party and Rave Off. This book is Steve's equivalent to New Order's "True Faith." Balanced. Grotesquely beautiful. Complex. Stunning in its courage. It is perfection, and the writer is wise enough to know this is the book that proved his flair and control of scholarship. This book is breath-taking. It has improved with its movement through time. It is also a confirmation of the mind we have lost.
