- Prehistoric life included ground sloths, a monkey and a meter tall flightless owl that ran nthrough the bush after rodents. - Unusual life includes the bearded anoles, cuban boa, almiqui (Solenodon), bee hummingbird, blue anole, Cuban brown anole, Cuban crocodile, Cuban painted tree snails, Cuban parakeet, pygmy boas, hutia and knight anole. - Cuba has 1400 mollusks, of which 1350 are endemic. The mogotes in the Sierra de los Organos have different snails at various elevations. Two large, brightly colored groups are the Cuban tree snails (Liguus) and the Cuban painted snails (Polymitas). - Cuba has three species of giant millipede - thick as a finger and twice as long. - Cuba is the only Antillean island with harverter ants (Atta). Most of the tiny brightly colored Macromischa ants are endemic. - Cuba hosts 87 species of lizard, including 50 species of anole almost all of which are endemic. The Knight anoles are large lizards living in the tree tops which have undergone gigantism due to open niches. - None of the 26 species of snakes are dangerous. - Cuba has 355 species of bird. Notable are the todies, the Cuban trogon, the Ivory Billed woodpecker, and the Bee Hummingbird.
