This was my textbook for Abnormal Behavior, so I had to read about a chapter (40+ pages) a week. So, yes, I have read the bulk of this text. One thing we didn't go over in class, but I knew it would be in there, is Gender Dysphoria (GD). If you're transgender -- more commonly transsexual, but whatever -- you will be diagnosed with this so you can get treatment and have it covered by health insurance. Most people these days believe it should be out of the DSM altogether. I'm one of those people, so I was interested in seeing how it was addressed in here. Oh, I was so disappointed. I was boiling with rage. Right away I knew I'd be pissed when there was a picture of two little girls running side by side. The caption basically read that one of those girls really isn't a girl at all, but a boy who believes he is a boy. Again, boiling rage. Fucking boiling. Stupid me decided to read further. They were pretty good with FtMs, mainly because it's more socially acceptable for a girl to want to be a boy. (Using what I believe their terminology would be. That is not my own belief whatsoever.) I got outraged, yet again, when MtFs were addressed. They aren't socially accepted. They literally go through the hardest time in their transitioning compared to FtMs. They subdivided them into two groups. One was what I would label an MtF; they are women, they go through years of transitioning with surgeries and HRT. Second was just a blatant thing of saying they're cross-dressers. No. Just... no. Cross-dressers, while they are transgender, are not MtFs. They do not feel discomfort in their body because of who they are. They do not suffer anxiety and mood disorders because they're not treated as they wanted. And, lumping them in is just completely wrong. This might be a critique of the DSM itself, but this could have been handled far better by the authors. They showed their hand and that they think transgender people, me included in this, are freaks who need to come to their senses and see that they're not really their gender identity. They'll never really men or women. While this textbook is excellent with every other disorder, including Dissociative Disorders and DID (formerly MPD), but this one. And, I just had to put that out there. Even in what should be a progressive community, it's obviously not.
