A great overview of the history of the harp. Certain chapters felt more useful than others. I would have loved more pictures. She spent quite a bit of time describing pictures that were unfortunately not included and way the other photos were organized in relation to the text required a lot of flipping around and hunting for the specifics. Rensch's tone was quite professional, but every so often her sense of humor would pop out. I especially loved the quote: "In an attempt to enlarge the musical range of the pedal harp, since each string could as yet be raised only one semi-tone by the pedal mechanism (from flat to natural or from natural to sharp), the Cousineaus doubled the harp mechanism and also the number of pedals, making fourteen pedals in all. Fortunately, the French Revolution prevented this small monster from demoralizing harp players for all time." Also, regarding an early performance of "Symphonie Fantastique": "In a letter to Franz Liszt, Berlioz despaired of rehearsal conditions, with some musicians ill, the trombone players on parade duty, and the harpist refusing to come to rehearsal because he wanted to practice his part."

I actually enjoyed this book allot. iI think the authors purpose was to share what exciting\bizarre mysterious stories in Illinois. The theme of this book is kind of a mix of horror and mystery. Troy Taylor is an Illinois resident who is fascinated with history and ghost stories. He does a great job of relating the history of a particular place along with the allegations made about it being haunted without drawing conclusions. He lets the reader be the judge. He does not condone people trespassing in grave yards or other places that should be kept private and so often just gives a general location of the place in question. its a great piece filled with fun and great interest, but not necessarily to be taken with entire seriousness. Definitely worth the time and fully enjoyable!
