Review # 1 was written on 2014-06-25 00:00:00 Peter Carr Sadly slightly dated now -- some of the areas are no longer consistent with more recent historical or archaeological evidence. However, I've not found a more recent work which does what this book does -- assemble historical estimates of population on a fine enough grain of detail to be useful for looking at individual areas. More recent books look at broad areas of the world; McEvedy takes it down to individual country-sized units. |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-01-30 00:00:00 Brent Tripet This is one of my favorite atlas reference books! :D Instead of just maps of the countries and states and such, it actually provides maps through historical time periods! Just today I used it as I was reading a book on Texas to look at the various Indian tribes and movements as well as the movements/settlements of the Spaniards and French during the same time period (early 1600's-1700's). This takes you up until just after the Korean War. Each of the periods in time before the maps also provides some pages on historical information that is very interesting, and pictures are included of artwork (later photography). In the back there are also maps of the Presidential Election votes so you can see which states voted for whom and by how far a margin each of the presidents won (up until Clinton in 1992). |
