Unlike most other books I review here, this one's for my dissertation. It's based on the author's dissertation - a project examining why/how rehabilitation programs fail or succeed in the distinct cultural contexts that exist at 5 different prisons across America - and although I've concluded it's not relevant to my own project, I appreciate it. Prose style is clear and unpretentious. Summaries of relevant literature are efficient and effective (albeit dated). Interviews, conversations, and observations are deftly interpreted. Central arguments are insightful and sensible - and, for a narrow swath of people who are into policy implementation and/or prison reform, possibly interesting.

An below average book on German crime and punishment. As the author leans to heavily to the left to be objectionable to his work.
