It's About Time Time Life Books have always focused on humanity in pictures. It is a true fact though that humans define their existence by the passage of time and by memories. This beautiful work is one of a series of Time-Life Books that covers world history. It does so with enough plot to satisfy most readers. But, the reading is just the tip of the story. Underneath lies a foundation of the marvelous color photos and watercolors throughout the book. Every two pages usually has a page size photo with detailed caption, besides the story text. Then there are sections of two-page-spread photos after each section. There is also a clear timeline at the end that summarizes key events in each region across the five decades. There is much to learn in this book. The book is divided into five main sections of history during the last fifty years of the 19th Century. These sections deal with India, Germany, Africa, Australia, and the United States in that turbulent time period. I discovered it while looking for material on The Scramble for Africa. The book I ordered will not be arriving for some time yet, so I scrambled for an alternative in the meantime for my stop in Togo, on my Journey Around the World in 80 Books for 2019. This was a great choice, and I found it at the Public Library. The whole series would make a great overview of history for family use. And, the photos really are incredible. In the meantime, I will be reading the more in-depth (though slow arriving) work The Scramble for Africa: The White Man's Conquest of the Dark Continent from 1876 to 1912 by Thomas Pakenham later as I near the cape. My next stops are two of Togo's equally small neighbors: Benin, where I will be reading, Say You're One of Them by Uwem Akpan and Burkina Faso with a children's book, Sophie and the Albino Camel by Stephen Davies; both on Audible. I am feeling really impatient waiting to read the Sophie book. It definitely looks intriguing. I do not think it is possible to ever be too old or too late to read a good children's book.

I read this book along with all of the others in the TimeFrame series as my initial introduction to history. They run from Pre-History up to the early 1990's in a chronological manner spanning some 25 volumes. Reading this series will make your entire study of history much more meaningful and rewarding. It is perfect for anyone who needs an overarching understanding of how the different periods of human history developed and how each period and event relates to the context of the whole. I knew almost nothing of history when I found this series of books and I thoroughly devoured them. This series of books provides a fantastic blueprint of the history of the world. It lays out the chronology and the geography of the major themes and events of world history in a very coherent, organized structure. Using this series as a starting place, every other aspect of history you will subsequently learn about will only add to what you've read here as you fill out your knowledge. Reading history books is not necessarily meaningful or intriguing without the ability to place what you're reading into a wider context. After reading this series you will be able to understand any element of history much better by realizing how it relates to the whole. In sum, I cannot recommend these books enough for anyone wanting a compelling and comprehensive overview of world history.
