Review # 2 was written on 2019-05-10 00:00:00 Daniel George This was one of the most difficult books on Greek and Roman religion that I have tackled but it was also one of the most rewarding. Kerenyi, a student of Jung, tackles the topic with an eye configured to root out meaning, rather than simple fact. Focusing on subtle nuances of Greek and Latin words associated with the gods and their worship, the author essentially reverse-psychoanalyzes the peoples who created and then submitted to these able fictions via the works (visual and written) that were created in the act or recognition of that worship. After struggling through the first fifty pages or so, I started to get a feel for his methodology and felt like I was benefitting from his unique approach. With over 120 B&W plates depiciting Greek and Roman art/craft associated with worship, The Religion of the Greeks and Romans is an invaluable visual reference, even if Kerenyi's approach proves to labor intensive for a more casual reader. |
