Review # 1 was written on 2015-02-17 00:00:00 Solomon Simmons An interesting tome exploring the reactions against the Great War of a variety of individuals. The cover and title indicate a focus on the Bloomsburies, but much of the content looks elsewhere, and Atkin's conclusion is that Bloomsbury "could be viewed as merely the 'tip of the iceberg' of aesthetic or humanistic opposition". They were very visible, but they certainly weren't alone. Other people reacting in similar ways came from a "wide cross-section of the cultural landscape". All of which is very reassuring to this little pacifist! It was easy to read, even if Atkin's prose doesn't scintillate. Having said that, it wasn't a light read - though that may be just because I've been in a creatively deadened place myself in recent years, and that made it all the harder to read about others in a similar (though of course far worse and deadlier) place through no choice of their own. To conclude, I'm very glad I read this, and feel strengthened by it. But I won't be rushing to re-read it until I feel stronger still!

Review # 2 was written on 2018-07-30 00:00:00 Brent Greenfield Read this as part of this terms studies. It was not as useful as a direct source of Bloomsbury information as I had hoped, there are a couple of chapters that deal with their activities but the rest of the book was still interesting to read. Hearing the stories of people famous and ordinary tangled up in the mess that was WWI is fascinating and happily the author was willing to step back allow them to tell their stories in their own words.
