Good coverage of the social, political, and religious factors that went into the early Japanese state conceptions of religion, legal, and sacred rules and law in early Japan (almost entirely pre-Heian, but there's some coverage of that period and related ideas as well). Make no mistake though, this is a scholarly treatise. To that end, if you're looking for a good exploration of these ideas, along with a lot of discussion about the nature and context of the primary sources are being used to support the analysis, this is your book, but this is definitely a bit of a dry read. I have a good grounding in Japanese history, but I think it'd be pretty accessible even if one did not. Granted, I'm dubious someone not already interested in Japanese history or legal and religious history would go looking for a book like this.

The kind of book that reminds me that when theories are applied on archaeological studies in a good way, the result can be great.
