My favorite books by this author are the easy readers about Fox and his friends, which were such an amusing breath of fresh air, back when my older son was learning to read, and I had to listen to him stumble through many deeply bland books. I was hoping this one would also amuse me, but while the illustrations are as charming as one might expect, the story left me underwhelmed. I definitely won't be reading it again, so have no real need to keep it, but my very nice copy is signed by the author, complete with an illustrated pig. What to do?

This is classic James Marshall, with its unique and whimsical style, both in the story line and the accompanying pictures. The delightfully quirky tale tells of a group of animals vacationing at a beach hotel at the same time. When strange things begin to happen, particularly to a yoga-loving chicken named Miss Marietta, it is up to detective Eleanor Owl and her friend Mr. Paws to solve the mystery. The book is full of humorous characters, including an arrogant pig, a fox with health issues, a hotel keeper who takes his job very seriously, and a family of cooties. The plot line and mystery are simple, but perfect for its intended age, and likely to spark an interest in reading mysteries with young readers. A good read for summer, or all year round!
