Review # 1 was written on 2017-09-22 00:00:00 Deborah Wood The underlying ideas are ingenious, yet Milnor exposes the fundamental simplicity of each idea. We begin with a strange coincidence on a torus. Slowly, we introduce more and more mathematics, in increasingly unexpected ways. These critical points become geodesics, our manifolds become infinite-dimensional spaces of paths that arise in the calculus of variations. Ultimately, the paths these spaces are on become the limits of classical Lie groups, a process that actually simplifies our calculation and provides the foundation for topological K-theory. |
