Review # 1 was written on 2019-07-19 00:00:00 Carlyn Mary Lucero This is a book that should be on the active use desk of every high school math teacher in the world. The problems were created for the American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) exams that are for high school students so there is a wide variation in difficulty but none require any mathematics beyond the level of precalculus. The problems are multiple-choice and detailed solutions to all are included. Therefore, it is a perfect resource for the teacher looking for problems to challenge the class or to present a topic in a different way. The book concludes with an index of the problems according to type, so it is very easy to find any problem that will conform to your needs and interests of the moment. It is also fun for more advanced mathematicians, I kept a notepad at my side as I was reading it and on many occasions picked it up and quickly verified what I considered to be the solution. Obviously, it is also an excellent resource for teachers training their students for math competitions. Review # 2 was written on 2014-12-28 00:00:00 William Hill I was enjoying learning about the International Mathematical Olympiad, getting a glimpse into the kids who compete at these things, but then I put it down for a bit to read some fiction. Now I find I'm not that enthusiastic about picking it up again. It's well written and the author makes what could be considered a dry subject quite interesting--the focus isn't so much on the math itself, but on the study of mathematics in the US vs. other countries, and what makes a "genius." Even though the upshot is everyone contains the makings of genius, I think my problem with finishing the book is I was a math major in college, and I feel like a big ol' dummy next to these kids. I can't even say I've *forgotten* more things than these kids know! Too depressing for me.... |
