Review # 1 was written on 2012-09-03 00:00:00 Maria Martinez Barrow animates his story of the rise of professionalism among American ornithologists, roughly in the century from 1850 to World War II, by focusing on conflict: between collectors and ethologists (those more interested in behavior), between conservationists and those merely interested in measurement, between both sides of the trinomial argument, and between personalities like stolid Robert Ridgway and unpleasant Elliott Coues. The extensive end notes, running to more than 50 pages, are prized by those of us looking for aids to the biographical literature on Joseph Hickey or Margaret Morse Nice. Barrow's deepest research is into the archives of the American Ornithologists' Union; one wishes for more information on its regional sister organizations, the Cooper and Wilson Ornithological Societies. |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-01-19 00:00:00 Jamie Otwell In 1977, Mina started it all. Compassion, flexibility, and persistence have gone a long way. |
