Review # 1 was written on 2016-02-27 00:00:00 John Rix Compiled in conjunction with a series on Film and Faith at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, this volume serves as a wonderful introduction to a wide variety of "spiritual" films from the 1930s through the 2000s. The essays range in length from 3 pages to 12, with most falling somewhere near the middle. Nearly all of the essays deal explicitly (even if briefly) with the theological aspects of the film in question. A number of the essays deal with the theology of these films in a productive fashion, raising questions that encourage the reader to further probe the specific films as well as larger faith-related questions. Included as well are a couple of introductory essays on the film that prompted the idea for the film series (Bresson's Au hasard Balthazar), and two essays to close the book (one on Hitchcock's Vertigo and another on Devotional Cinema--a fantastic piece based on a lecture given by Nathaniel Dorsky). I can see myself returning to the specific essays when I happen to catch one of the films included in this book. And more generally, I can see myself returning often to Dorsky's essay as I wrestle with its implications and with my own thoughts on the nature of the medium.

Review # 2 was written on 2011-08-09 00:00:00 Peter Ehinger I find this book is appropriate to wanted transcendental elements in film language, it will be a great discourse from wide range of films from Bergman, Bresson, Tarkovsky, Dreyer, Ouedraogo, Rossellini, Fellini, Kieslowski, Kiarostami and many others
