A brief study of 1950s rural Georgia. The voice feels authentic and Annie Rye is likable if very stubborn (which makes her even more real) as she struggles with learning to trust a white girl who is being nice to her. Relationship with sisters is drawn well but somehow the storyline itself remained flat for me despite happenings that should create drama.

I remember getting this off the shelf in my fourth grade class and "accidentally" keeping it because I loved it so much. Will have to go back and read it to remember all the places it took me when I was a kid.
