"The Purple Turkey" is a wonderful way for kids to use their imaginations with humor and learn how to use play-on words. "Why are the Pilgrims buried in Massachusetts? Because they are all dead." The teacher can have books to explore what really happened in this time period. The book hits on a little history and tradition of Thanksgiving and the coming of the first settlers of the United States. "If April showers bring May Flowers, what do May flowers bring? Pilgrims." Was it really the pilgrims who came on the Mayflower? What other groups came to America at this time, and what kind of ambitions did they have. Show kids that history can be fun, jokes can even be written about history! The teacher can assign small groups to find joke books that pertain to history or traditional early America. The illustrator has made the drawings simply in black and white so as not to take away from the joke, and they are made to match the joke told.

Pure fun to read aloud with cute drawings to accompany the riddle or joke. Personal favorites include 1. What are unhappy cranberries called? 2. Why did the turkey sit on the tomahawk? 3. What did the leftover drumstick say to the cranberry sauce? 1. Blueberries! 2. To hatchet. 3. Foiled again.
