Aimed at people with some familiarity with French, this book consists of texts, exercises and explanations of grammar and usage. The texts come from a wide range of types of writing, from modern literary fiction to articles in magazines and newspapers. There are 31 chapters plus six revision texts, and a key to the exercises is provided. Each chapter treats a different aspect of French grammar and usage, such as the form and use of the different verb tenses, or how to give extra emphasis to a word or phrase. Explanations are clear, and start from the basic - such as the forms of the present tense in regular verbs - before moving on to more advanced aspects and usage. There are illustrations of differences between more formal French and the French of everyday. This is a good book if you want to reinforce your knowledge of French grammar or improve your style of writing or speaking in the language. The structure means that you can turn straight to the relevant chapter if you want to review, for example, the subjunctive. Be aware that some of the texts include some words that may be less familiar: no gloss or vocabulary is included, so you may on occasion need recourse to a dictionary.

I bought this way back in the early 90s when I had Jean-Claude as a lecturer for my BA (Hons) French & Communication Arts degree at Huddersfield University. Jean-Claude was always interesting, a dynamic teacher who could literally teach you 1000 French words in an hour, which he did. I think that lecture is a chapter in this book, which was the grammar book of choice for his students. I'm kinda sad that this edition is superseded by a further edition by someone else. I'm pretty sure the fundamentals of French Grammar have stayed pretty much the same in the last 30 years or so, and if you find yourself with a copy of this book, you're in luck, because you're in Jean-Claude's capable hands.
