"The Kids Canadian Bird Book" is well-done. There were things I didn't know. My spouse & I know our birds, so that is saying something about this 1995 book. It is short enough to feel eager to read it as a story. My spouse recommends four stars in place of five, for I had enjoyed reading it aloud, because there is room for Pamela Hickman to expand. Understandably, much is left out in Canada-wide coverage but we are referring to details she, herself introduced. In the case of the Burrowing Owl, which he is certain has been endangered, he felt it was an error not to include this bird she mentioned in prairie pages, with her table of endangered species. The robin is another example of, if not misleading, than of incomplete information. I was surprised and excited to learn our abundant spring resident is a fruit-eater. I will leave fruit for them along with the skittish Baltimore Oriole. However for the benefit of people not in the know, it should also be said that they are worm-eaters; an omnivorous bird. Heather Collins's drawings are gorgeous, perky, loveable, and very helpful in identifying little faces we haven't met. It is also a thrill to recognize those we know personally. Their chapters are very informative and clear: summarizing birds in our varied regions. I applaud teaching how to identify birds by size, shape, tail, colours, markings, and movement. Birdfeeder building will be fun for my niece and nephew. A caution that should be added to the protection page, pertains to the plastic holders that tie sets of soda cans or bottles together. Soda bottles were mentioned as a building material but not that those plastic enclosure holes can tangle birds in dumps. Please rip them, before putting them into your garbage.

I used to love reading Dick King-Smith books when I was a wee dragonet, so when I had the chance to pick up this cute little book recently, I jumped at the chance. I also love tales about animals of any kind, so that was another attraction. Having said that, I haven't read any of Dick King-Smith books in about thirty years! And I wish I had read more, because I've rediscovered my love for his books. They're really funny and cute. Of course, probably most people know about Babe the Sheep-Pig, who features in an excerpt in this book as well as Max the Hodgeheg! My favourite story in this is Woolly, which is about a mammoth who lives with cave-people and who invents fire and fish and chips! :D hehe. Super stuff. That doesn't mean to say the other stories are bad in any way. They're not. I just love Woolly the most. The illustrations were really cute, too. This is definitely something I want to return to again and I am definitely going to try and get more of Dick King-Smith's books when I'm able to. Just as much because I love his stuff as for nostalgia's sake.
