Olson utilized the forest products industry and the forest economy as the subject matter example in her book. Olson's argues that conservationists and preservationists continually argued that a timber famine would result in the United States due to an insatiable appetite for wood, but were completely ignoring the impacts that supply, demand, and consumer behavior (e.g., substitution) would have on the utilization of forest resources. Olson's argument is quite persuasive and backed by factual information, not innuendo or supposition that often is used by preservationists to push their agenda(s). Given that the book is more academic in nature than popular press, it would have been helpful if Olson had included footnotes throughout the book to point the reader to additional information and to provide clarification regarding various facts being stated. Instead, the reader has to do a bit of legwork at times to determine where, exactly, Olson was getting her facts and how she interpreted these facts to fit her general thesis. |
