Review # 1 was written on 2012-04-16 00:00:00 Isabelle Langer Dress & Undress by Elizabeth Ewing is an okay historical survey of women's undergarments, not scholarly or definitive, but useful. It doesn't cover quite the years advertised; 3000 BC to the fifteenth century takes up only ten pages, with the bulk of the book devoted to subsequent periods in increasing detail. There are many good, and often unusual, primary source illustrations, although none in color. The writing is breezy. There is a bibliography, but no footnotes. There is one unfortunate thing. Along with the excellent primary source illustrations, Ms. Ewing has drawn her own illustrations of many fashions. The reader cannot be sure of their accuracy, particularly since Ms. Ewing seems to have given all of her women (perhaps unconsciously) 1970s makeup and facial expressions. Her Victorian women look like part of the 1970s Victoriana revival and her flappers look like extras in "Bonnie and Clyde." |
Review # 2 was written on 2020-11-23 00:00:00 Jason Kuhn Poorly-researched (images are misattributed, grand generalizations are made). Not recommended for the true devote.e of dress history. |
