If I could write this book again, I would change three things: 1. I would wrestle the Donelson family members for the letters that they allowed Jon Meacham to use. I tried to get those letters, but I evidently did not try hard enough. Or ply them with enough food and drink. 2. In his JAH review, John Sacher nailed me for not discussing more of Donelson's views on disunion in the Civil War chapter, and rightly so. I should have written more about how the war fit into the arc of Donelson's political career. My bad. 3. The error in the list of abbreviations. Drives me crazy every time I think about it. If you don't see it, good on you; that doesn't mean that it isn't there. But you have to admit, the cover looks really cool! (Too bad I wasn't the one to come up with the idea.)

Enjoyable biography of a "B" player on the stage of history (the fate of most of us). Poor Andrew demonstrates the perils of being connected to a successful relative. The luck of birth at some point runs out and one must stand on their own
