Ulery, Jr.'s masterful translation of the Venetian history of Pietro Bembo captures at once the narrative forthrightness and the decorum of the original; at once concise yet elegant, it is a fitting English adaptation of one of the greatest Early Modern Latin chronicles. Intended to record events of interest to Venice between the years 1487 and 1513, this history deals primarily with Venetian foreign entanglements and wars: in this volume historians will recognize the concession of Queen Catherine Cornaro of Cyprus, King Charles VIII of France's Italian expedition, the machinations of Ludovico "Il Moro" Sforza, and the Salt War. There are also numerous references to internal Venetian affairs, however, including election reform, military administration, and the first appearance of syphilis in Venice. In keeping with the Loeb editions, the I Tatti library edition features facing pages of Latin and English. Although not a critical edition, Dr. Ulery's Latin edition is more than sufficient for scholarly work. The inclusion of a short biography, textual history, and pseudo apparatus criticus will also be most welcome for academics. I would recommend this work for scholars of early modern Venetian history with research that emphasizes military history and foreign affairs. For students of Latin, this text would serve as admirable practice for an intermediate student of Latin, usually on his mid or late second year of study.
