okay I know, I know this book is psycho linguistics but it is soo fun. It is very dry and lots of definitions and too old to be remotely up to date. But I think that old theories are more fun than new theories although perhaps not relevant to a linguistics class. But this book helps to understand how conversations work. Take for example(somewhat edited): Jewess: Is this ours or is it a children's book (a copy of enders shadow) Me: It looks like juvie, and it's priced like one... Yeah kids. J: what's the difference? M: nothing J: But why is it kids. M: because kids read it. J: It's an adult book M: All scifi is written at a 12 year old level according to thomas disch (we were standing in the sci fi section just on the basis of humor) J: You read sci fi. M: Yeah I love it J: So you're a child M: No, that's like saying only children can read peter pan. Psycholinguistics allows us to understand comprehension errors in this sentence. The listener assumed saying something was written for twelve year olds was meant as an insult. This refelects a problem in the semantic and pragmatic processing of the statement as well as an error in the fundamental quality and relevance agreements of language. Because I read this book I can say self important things like that. read this book and you can say them too.
