I think those who have what math professors call a certain level of "mathematical maturity" will probably enjoy this more than the general public. If one has been feeling excessively cocky about one's intellect, this is a good book to bring you back down to earth, and remind you, Socrates, that the more you learn, the more you realize how little you know. The author focuses on phenomena that have traditionally been difficult to understand: the catastrophic, the chaotic, the paradoxical, the irreducible, and the emergent. The book is more an introduction or a survey than a destination. He provides a section at the end ("To Dig Deeper") that serves as a annotated bibliography, or as a tease to remind you that as you walk toward the horizon, the horizon always recedes. Has he left out any major area of the complex? I wonder. How about the simply overwhelming? Maybe there are disciplines that require more by way of background and preparation than is possible to acquire in a lifetime.
