A friend of my father's gave this to me when I was little (five or six). If you knew me, you'd understand why this was an appropriate gift. I was constantly running to this book to look up everything I could.

Two books in one here. The story of the author's balloon expendition over the Arctic is interesting and worthy, but the real thrust of the book lies in his retelling of the parallel expedition made by three Swedes a century earlier. The 1897 expedition ended in disaster, but it is this very failure that makes the tale all the more gripping. Vividly written and highly evocative, this is a great book for anyone interested in exploration - on any continent.
