It's a book mostly about the relationship between Nepal and it's neighbors, particularly their far away Western neighbors. About how the area of land remained the same for centuries until the British Raj became neighbors and a North Korean-styled dictatorship took hold of the country. Now that colonialist left and Nepal can no longer be isolated due to their powerful neighbors, every power at the time became involved for their personal and ideological goals. The potential to develop into either a commie block or industrialized capitalist state makes Nepal a curiosity, especially when compared to their citizens who hold strong to their culture and religion. It seems like the Nepalese are a relaxed and friendly people who would rather exist in a balance between empires than compete. My only complaint is this book is outdated, which isn't fair to the book since it's from the 60s-70s. It's well written, and ends with a neat travelog of the journalist's trek to Mount Everest.
