This book takes place in 1843 in England/Scotland (Victorian times), but most of it is in Scotland. Patrick and Anne have a history together, which you'll get flashbacks of throughout the first half of the book. They are pulled together to solve a sort of mystery regarding a family members death. The book definitely tries to be humorous (3 stars just for humor really), and in many parts is quite funny. The hero poses as the heroines butler during this investigation. Some of the humor, and in fact much of the book, falls flat for me though. Things that were meant to be funny, I found rather annoying. The heroine just held on to her grudge for way way way too long when honestly I felt there was zero reason for her to behave like that all.

My first Jillian Hunter stand-alone, and while it fared better than the later Boscastle books, there were still some pretty big issues that kept me from really enjoying it. The first issue I had was the idea that Queen Victoria would have called the two protagonists together to solve a murder in the Highlands. OK, sure, QV was all big into the Highlands like tweens today are big into the Jonas Brothers, but come on. The death of a minor noble in the Highlands would not be cause for QV to call for an inquiry. It was hard to believe. I was also bothered by Anne's continued insistence on ignoring/denying the hero, Patrick. It just went on too long. By the end I was rooting for Patrick just to drop her since she was so self-obsessed with her own petty issues. It was also bothersome that the deceased husband of Anne was so emasculated. Of course, the hero has to be so supremely macho, that any other man must pale in comparison. For once it would be nice to read a romance where the widow has a (gasp!) good marriage! With satisfying sex! OH NOES! What saved this book from being a DNF was the dialog. When Hunter is on, she is on FIRE! And the dialog is superb. Unfortunately, the plot mechanics got in the way of my overall enjoyment.
