Ordinarily I feel like picture book biographies do better when they get specific, focusing on a part of the person's life. The picture book format isn't always well suited to a beginning to end life story, but here it works. Especially since it is such a multifaceted, interesting life. There are a LOT of picture books about African-American pioneers busting the color barriers and while that story is important it is really nice to get a full picture of a person, see that their life was more than that, and who they were. I also liked the way the book began, it helped the story unfold very nicely.

The inspirational story of Roy Campanella's life and career as the first African American catcher in Major League Baseball. He overcame poverty and racism in his early life and disability in his later life to inspire us all to be our best.
