Really excellent, really insightful. Written in the 1980s, this book is one of the best explanations I've seen for the erosion of New Deal Democratic politics that gave us the two-party system we have today. Changes within the Democratic party that happened around the time of the Watergate scandal played a huge role in skewing the priorities of the party towards the wealthy. Combined with factors that made the Republican Party even more sensitive to business interests - the perfect conditions were created for a two-party system dominated by wealth. This spurred four decades of policies that have given the United States extreme wealth and income inequality. These are factors that I haven't seen in other inequality literature that I have read. This book is worth your time if you are interested in inequality.

This is an excellent book for those who does not run from technical terminology, and statistics. Overall, it a rather dry, wonkish book that spelled out the political land scape of the mid to late 80's, and 90's. Having grown up during the 90's, and having come from a family that paid attention to politics during that time, I found the book enlightening, even despite overwhelmingly specific data points (I'm looking at you chapter on campaign finance!) The book lacked some more nuanced descriptive statistics, but what it lacked in the easy to follow charts and graphs that we are all used to now, it made up for with raw data. I will say that the book is not objective, and it clearly uses the data to try and hide this left leaning bias, but this is counter balanced by the plethora of of correct predictions that it makes. If you find politics interesting, read this book. If you are an activist type, read this book. If you just want to understand the current state of politics, read this book.
