Pierre and his friend Bernard must explore the Francophone countries of Africa to collect all the beads of a necklace left to him by his explorer uncle Gaston in order to win Pierre's inheritance. For intermediate students of French. Narration is in the present tense for the most part, with some passé composé in the dialogue and the occasional passé composé/imparfait in the narrative. It was a reasonably fun story, and it was nice to see acknowledgment that non-white people speak French and to visit places that aren't France, but it was just dripping with colonialism. (And sexism.)
