Review # 1 was written on 2015-02-27 00:00:00 Adrienne Borders This book makes important linkages between generations of poets--the early modernists pushing against romanticism, and the poetic legacy of Wordsworth through Stevens and Ashbery. Ferry, above all, has the vocabulary to discuss what is happening in a poem, and does that with supreme thoughtfulness. I love the chapters on the evolution of the English sonnet, and on the word "thing" in the poems of Wordsworth, Stevens, and Ashbery. Bottom line: Poets have always desired to improve upon the last generation's work in the most inventive way possible. Thanks to Rosanna Warren for recommending this book in a recent issue of American Poetry Review. |
Review # 2 was written on 2009-04-20 00:00:00 Brian Williams A very comprehensive narrative of United States History. Quality attempts are made to include a wide range of "voices" to help convey the topic(s). Probably the most thorough coverage of any text currently on the market considering its breadth and depth. However, the text is not engaging for a high school AP US History class within a typical public high school; better for university level. It truly reads like a committee wrote and can feel sterile at times. After 12 years with this text my district has made the [wise] choice to make a new selection. |
