I've read this at least half a dozen times. It's priceless--which might be why it is so hard to find. In this discussion of the church--any church--coming to terms with persons with developmental disabilities and how they "fit" into the sacramental life of that church, this is THE book! I've read a lot of others. None are as complete in handling every facet of the discussion. I have a son with a profound intellectual disability. While others his age moved seamlessly into the sacramental life of our church traditions, he required accommodations and a change of policy at every step. This little book helped us navigate that process. I cannot recommend it enough, and I think every new divinity student should be required to read it.

A manual of any sort is not going to be scintillating reading; that's not the grounds on which you judge. You have to judge it according to its purpose: and the purpose of a liturgical manual is to give instructions on the proper celebration of liturgy. Msgr. Elliott's book does this and does it thoroughly, indicating what is to be done, where there are options (in some cases, where there are not options), and pointing out along the way points where things differ from the pre-conciliar rite, or where it is necessary to turn to it to fill in a lacuna. To someone not interested in the mechanics of liturgy, this book will offer nothing to entertain, but it is a resource that should be available to anyone who DOES have a part in it.
