Personal reaction: I liked this book because of how it showed how becoming one with nature can be beneficial. For example, Tall Bear treated the eagles with respect and eventually they adopted him and helped him out of the nest. Purpose: This would be a good book to read aloud for 2nd to 5th graders, especially during a lesson on Native Americans because of the rich vocabulary from their language, including their names. It also shows how betraying your friends to get what you want could backfire on you. Because children at this age are finding themselves and their goals as well as friendships, they can learn that hurting those you care about to get something you want is not the only solution.

This is the story of friendship and betrayal. Two friends go off in search of enemies and find eagles. White Hawk betrays his friend Tall Bear because they love the same woman. In the end Tall Bear is raised by the eagles. Tall Bear returns to his camp and marries the woman, Red Leaf, that White Hawk tried to be with first. I didn't really like this book as much. It does show how betraying a friendship and being selfish gets you nowhere in life, but it is not really a story for younger children. It is not something that they can really relate to.
