Review # 1 was written on 2015-07-05 00:00:00 Paul Kinderen This encyclopedia covers just about every topic of high school and undergraduate pure mathematics in a readable and - for the most part - easily understandable way. Also included are biographies of many mathematicians, and several topics in recreational mathematics. I found very few points to quibble about. In the entry for "casting out nines", "remainder" should read "digit sum." Under "chain rule" the final term in the second equation should be 200x(x^2+2)^99. The title of Lagrange's "Traité de la résolution des équations numériques de tous les degrés" should be translated "Treatise on the solution of numerical equations of every degree," not "resolution of numeric equations of all degree" (p. 299). Pythagoras is given a biography as a real person, which like Homer he may well have been, but he's perhaps more accurately described as the personification of a school of thought. Was the historical development of trigonometry motivated by a theory about circles, as stated on p. 508, or triangles, as on p. 510? Sometimes the explanations are simplified by the omission of important qualifications. But in truth the encyclopedia is an excellent piece of work and I only wish it were bigger. |
