Deontology is defined as not consequentialism, which in turn says that right or wrong is determined by the consequences of an action. This book addresses, and mostly promotes, deontology. Several of the articles in the book cite works on consequentialism (Scheffler's name comes up several times), but no articles are devoted to it. Mostly this book suffers from a problem all too common in philosophy: It does not try to incorporate actual facts, such as by delving into sciences such as psychology and sociology. Philosophy has much to contribute in suggesting what questions those fields should ask and by explaining consequences and limits of their findings. It is worthless when it tries to come up with the all the answers on its own, as most of this book does. This is particularly problematic when it tries to find rational explanations in a realm which, in all likelihood, is irrational at its core. The book still examines questions which are worth thinking about, but don't think it has answers to them.

I probably need to read this again when I have read more Bataille, Foucault and Deleuze. There were sections that I really appreciated responding to different theories of language and what language can do and be and facilitate and function.
