The Life Cycle of a Chicken depicts its subjects in a positive way. Bright color photos and upbeat text inform youngsters of the activities and growth of chickens, from egg to adult. The chickens are depicted in healthy, natural surroundings and the mother hen's touching devotion to her eggs and chicks is shown. The first page tells us, Most chickens live on farms. These chickens roam around outside. They are called free-range. They are fed grain, but also scratch the ground to find seeds, insects, grubs, and worms. While I believe the text was specifying "these chickens" as the ones followed in the book, it would be an honest mistake for young readers to assume "these chickens" are "most chickens"--and anyone who knows anything about modern agriculture knows that the vast majority of chickens in the industrialized world live nothing like the birds in these photos. The authors could have addressed this in an age appropriate way, but they neglect to do so. The Life Cycle of a Chicken contains information and photographs of chick development inside the egg and the hatching process. This book could be used in conjunction with other books and worksheets to replace classroom hatching projects. The book The Chicken and the Egg by Oxford Scientific Films is a superior look at chick development, but this newer title will probably be easier to locate.

Simple overview of the life of chickens, which should be avoided if you don't want your children to say "let's get a rooster so we can have chicken babies!"
