We finished this last night before bed and it's the second chapter book Julia's read so far. During the day we stick with shorter books and the switching back and forth between the two kinds of books is doing a lot of good I think. She's starting to voice the desire to want to read on her own and out loud to me. She's also picking up more words by sight. Julia loves SpongBob so when she brought this to me in the library I wasn't surprised. It could have been 11,000 pages and she's have lugged it over to me wanting to check it out. As it happens there are only 9 chapters in this (I think) and each chapter is about 4 pages long (again, I think). So, very easy to read in increments which we do since we read her chapter books mainly at bedtime and occasionally during the day. The book reads just like you're watching the cartoon and while I haven't see this particular episode I'd be very suprised if it wasn't one. Julia wasn't familiar with it either but the few black and white illustrations helped the story along. This is real good for any kid who loves SpongeBob and is close to starting to learn to read themselves.

Well, I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with this book. For one, I HATE Spongebob Squarepants with a passion, but I know a lot of kids in my class watch the show and enjoy it, so I figured I'd check out the chapter books to see if I could read them at school. So, being it was Spongebob AND a short chapter book, I was expecting it to be poorly written with choppy sentences... and I was quite surprised by the writing style. Now, it wasn't AMAZING writing...but for a children's easy read chapter book, I was a bit impressed. For authors out there that want to "dumb down" (as I call it) their writing to cater it for younger kids, you can do it in a way that doesn't make the book sound like a 1st grader wrote it. I think Terry Collins did a great job at writing simply but not so stiff and boring. So, well done Terry! I don't relish the idea of reading Spongebob chapter books to my students, but I'm happy to know if it's something they're interested in, I can read it and the writing won't be completely awful and tedious. That makes me as both a reader and a teacher happy.
