Maybe more of a 2.75 as it was a bit pedestrian, but then that's the style of detection that's being portrayed. I liked the story and the characters of Morimoto and Suzuki, although I did have to re-read a couple of pages as I was starting to get confused by all the umbrellas, there are more than two.

Another EPIC book! This was something. The author favours telling over showing, and I'm really surprised at the difference it makes to the story, particularly since in the mystery genre, the emphasis is pretty firmly on telling. This isn't to say that Hemion doesn't go into detail -- he does, plenty of it. It's exact, textbook precise and completely unevocative. It's a shame because this book has all the elements of a good mystery, but because of the way the story is told, it never came together for me.
