Review # 1 was written on 2015-07-08 00:00:00 Gabriel Levy Country Cooking in the Blue Grass state of Kentucky! This cookbook was first published in 1904 by native Kentuckian Minnie C. Fox. Much more than just another cookbook, this one expresses the "deeper symbiotic relationship between black and white women in long-ago southern kitchens". Minnie Fox understood the great contribution to the cuisine of the day from African American women. The people of the time however were not ready to embrace this and the book went into obscurity for over a century. Breads Eggs Soups Fish Oysters Entrees Croquettes Fowl Game Meat Sauces Vegetables Salads Ice Cream and lots more!! A cookbook full of history!! |
Review # 2 was written on 2016-11-24 00:00:00 Michelle Conner 117 recipes and more from the then-young 34 year-old Southern chef, no longer with us and taken well before his time. Bill Neal was very instrumental in elevating both Southern cuisine and more importantly, its perception by outsiders, to the level it enjoys today. I drove by Crook's Corner, which he owned and was the chef twice a day for years without stopping by to have him personalize my copy of his cookbook - and then he was gone. Life is too short. A welcome addition to anyone with a collection of Southern or particularly NC cooking - see also Moreton Neal's "Remembering Bill Neal." |
