Good engagement with relevant cuneiform texts (esp. for those of us who don't read cuneiform).

Another expensive academic tome that I've wanted to get hold of for a while. Luckily I downloaded it for free from the Bookzz website. As the publisher's bumpf says the book covers all aspects of birth from conception through to birth and a little beyond to the care of the newborn baby. It is fascinating how very differently the ancients viewed childbirth and human fertility. There is a wealth of information that will intrigue, surprise and engage the inquiring mind. From myths dealing with the creation of mankind, to incantations to protect the mother and her foetus, onto omens predicting the gender of the child or its future life, and some rather stomach-churning prescriptions and remedies - this book seems to cover it all. For me the highlight was the final chapter on Lamashtu, a monstrous demoness who takes special delight in killing babies with her deadly touch. A very welcome addition to our knowledge of the ancient Near East and an important work detailing the role of women in ancient societies.
