Fables, Myths, legends (3 in 1) Zoo of the gods: animals in myth, legend, & fable, written illustrated by Anthony S. Mercatante, is a 240 page young adult collection of myths, legends, and fables published by Harper & Row in 1974. This is a collection of 47 stories of mythological characters that use a variety of motifs: trickery, magical objects, greed, betrayal, etc. They are 2 -3 pages in length and are from around the world all has animals as their main character and help explain what were once the great mysteries of life. The animals can talk, as well as other human characteristics, and have magical powers. They include anecdotes, jokes, ogres, giants, religion and the supernatural. These stories show how animal mythology, folklore, and symbolism has left an impact on the literature, art, and music.

This is a nice little survey of how all animals, including creations of the mind, have been treated in folklore and mythology worldwide. While this book does not have the depth or breadth of Joseph Campbell's work, it is a good, informative survey, and could even serve as an introduction to this fascinating study. The author presents the material logically and clearly, and the book is well-written, in an informal approachable and readable style, including some flashes of humor and some amusing parenthetical person asides I knew some of this material, and had a nodding acquaintance with some, but there was much that was new, so I found this book both informative, interesting, and fun to read.
