This one challenged my thinking a lot. It was painful at times to keep reading because of all the thoughts it brought to the front of my mind. I am in an interracial relationship but we hadn't really thought about things the way Childs presents them ever before. We have been together 16 months and the first few months were definitely more of a "color blind" perspective. Now I think we are a bit more race conscious. It's forced upon us, really. If you live in society, and do not hide yourself away in your own apartment all the time, then you're going to have to address your relationship in race conscious ways. As we make our relationship more serious-- moving in together next month-- more of the coded racism Childs speaks about comes out. "I didn't really think your relationship would ever go in that direction," my family has told me, demonstrating Childs' findings that IR relationships are usually seen as trends/fads/solely sexual. Read the reviews on amazon.com. If you are looking for a well researched and well written book regarding interracial relationships, I would definitely recommend it. I was not a sociology major but still greatly enjoyed reading this. It is academic but not so foreboding that the general public cannot access it.

This book is set on a main topic which is racism, but this book talks about the people that experienced and had to go through the racism time which is back in 1900's. Usually each chapter would talk about a specific person or people and what happen to them in their life involving racism. And what they did or would have done to prevent racism from happening or stop the separation from colored people to white people. About racism in this book is that white and colored people had to be separated in many different or specific places. Like whites had to go to the white school and they would have great conditions for their school and had more opportunities in life and education. For colored people it is the opposite for them, they have bad conditions, they are not treated respectfully or not treated fairly. This book will be good for a person that likes to read about racism of course, but for a person who wants to know about the past and what or who changed this world into a better place.
