Dr. Seuss was a famous author. He wrote Cat in a Hat and Oh, the places you'll go! and many others. Dr. Seuss loved drawing. When he was young, he drew, and drew, and drew. His favorite teacher, Mr. Smith, helped Dr. Seuss improve his very own writing into stories! When he grew up, he started making cartoons for magazines. But nobody wanted his crazy drawings. Finally, he started working for a magazine called Judge. They payed him $75 a week. His next job is Flit.(Flit is a popular insect repellent.) They payed him $250 a week! Then he started working on children books. He worked 8 hours a day! At age 82, Dr. Seuss caught throat cancer! And after a while, he died at age 87. When he died,he had wrote 48 books, and he sold over 200,000,000 books. [Parent's review] Oh, the places he went Dr. Seuss probably is one of the two most popular authors, the other is Eric Carle, among young kids in the United States. His "Oh, the places you will go" is my favorite book in the whole Dr.Seuss book collections. Other than "Oh, the places you will go", I have read many of his books to my own kids, and to kids in my kids’ schools. To be honest, I never am a fan of his books, although his books do have very smart working and rhymes that the kids love. The reason why I never really liked his books is solely because of his drawings, some of which even gave me nightmares. (Although, and the funny thing was, my kids never found any issues with his drawings at all.) After reading this book, I get to know more about Dr. Seuss. One thing that soothed my “phobia” of Dr.Seuss’s drawing was that he was never professionally trained in drawing or painting and he knew that he was not good at it the moment he starting drawing for children’s books. So I guess he was not drawing those (I call “creepy”) drawings on purpose but just did not know how to draw more nicely. Regardless of how bad he was at drawing, it did not affect his popularity among American kids instantly when his books hit the market. I think one thing was he had a very good publisher and marketing campaign, and the more important thing was that he did extended wording and rhyming to a super fun level, which makes the phonic learning and early-stage reading much earlier. On personal level, this book also talks a lot about how he grew up in a small town and in a family of German descendants, and his relationship with his wife, also business partner and children’s book author. Dr. Seuss did not have any children himself, that might explain a bit as his books are all very “practical” but not “emotional”.

I have loved Dr. Suess since I was a child. From reading his books to watching the Grinch that Stole Christmas every Christmas without fail. When I was in undergrad I would do a different “master copy” drawing of one of his book covers every semester for my note binder. As I have gotten older, people have offered me whispers that he was not everything I thought he was, and I don’t have any thing specific on that statement. I will have to examine that and have more information in order to make my own informed decision. But according to this book for children on his life, he is everything I thought he was and more. I plan to look more at all aspects of the man. But it is obvious from this book’s perspective at least, that he did do a lot of really good things in his life.
