Review # 1 was written on 2019-03-30 00:00:00 Sydney Schanberg I watched MARK TWAIN AND ME over and over and over again as a child. Jason Robards will always have a special place in my heart because of it. I loved the fact that the little girl playing Dorothy shared my name. And above all else, I loved that the story was REAL. In my teenage years we bought a copy of the VHS, and it was then I realized the movie was based on Dorothy's memoirs. Thus began a decades long quest to find the book. I inquired at numerous libraries, bookstores, and searched every bookshelf I saw. No one had HEARD of it, much less knew where to find it. So I finally broke down and bought a copy online as an adult, and read it right away. It was well worth the wait! Now to be fair, someone without my love of the movie likely wouldn't enjoy it as much. It does drag in a few spots, and Dorothy isn't the best writer. But it's so fresh to hear about Mark Twain through a child's eyes. I feel like they're both old friends of mine. I've read three of his books, and reading this makes me eager to read more. Now if only Disney would release the movie to DVD...

Review # 2 was written on 2019-06-15 00:00:00 Stephen Chmielewicz This book had a certain charm, telling the story of Samuel CLemens and one of the little girls he befriended late in his life. It paints a very rosy picture of a man who by all other accounts was having some difficulties and was in fact embroiled in a major incident in his household. I've read quite a few books about this period and there seem to be camps regarding the Isabel Lyon issue. I find it odd that Dorothy Quick chose never to name her, referring to her instead as Clemens' secretary. It just makes me suspect she wanted to tell a simpler story than was real.
