Review # 1 was written on 2018-10-16 00:00:00 Juliana Yarosh It's really easy to understand why people built elaborate conspiracies around Lincoln's assassination. It just doesn't seem right that John Wilkes Booth could decide one afternoon to assassinate the president and go through with it successfully that evening. (And then completely botch his getaway, but that's another story.) Hanchett does a very thorough job of dismantling the conspiracy theories both large and small--and I greatly appreciate his disdain for the men who fabricated or suppressed evidence to make their theories work. As I always do, I wanted him to go into more detail and give more specifics, because that is the sort of thing I am a geek about, but this is a very interesting and useful book even so. |
Review # 2 was written on 2018-10-17 00:00:00 Eric Ryder Hancett documents all of the theories regarding the Lincoln assassination and discredits them, including those that implicated CSA President Davis, US Secretary of War Stanton, VP Johnson, and the Pope. Widely considered the final word on the assassination in 1986, it may have been superseded by Kaufman's American Brutus. It is still worth reading however. Not for those who believe in conspiracy theories. |
