What a wonderful book that took me on a long journey through the life of a familiar name through a familiar world. Miller has written a great deal about the world as he knew it in Scotland and the Highlands about 200 years ago. And I must say that he is just as much a familiar character to me, as the world he lives in has so much in common with our present one. Whenever I get to read books such as this, it is impressed on me that all that his changed are our tools. Our methods, concepts and disputes haven't changed, our struggles and crisis haven't changed - mankind has not changed. On closing I must stress once more what a wonderful journey this was. It was difficult to read, since the usage of words is different to what I'm used to, and many terms are just as strange to me as the places he's been or the names he quotes. But I would read any such volume again, for it delivers so much insight into the most mystic and thrilling topic: humanity.

Very long book.... but in some part interesting.. the Geologist Hugh Miller tells his life story in Scotland and how he educated himself through life experience and reading ... he committed suicide as result of mental illness...very sad end for an intellectual man
