Review # 1 was written on 2008-02-21 00:00:00 Randy Wilcox I believe this was made into a drama by the BBC, but was banned given the nature of the topic - and was never shown. Now, how about that. The play is the life of Jesus, but taken as if he is man, not God. A powerful reworking of the Jesus story ending, as the story would have, on Golgotha with the disciples wondering just what went wrong and Jesus taking his last horrible breath. A remarkably powerful play - and ought to have been shown. The point being that faith is the thing and the sole point of that story, and faith ought to require disbelief as the easier of the solutions (otherwise, whence faith at all?) - and Potter's naturalistic portrayal should not have undercut the faith of the faithful - which I don't think was his intent. Anyway, I liked it and would have loved to have seen it. But as Chekhov said, a good play is not made any better by the actors and a bad play is not saved by good actors.

Review # 2 was written on 2013-02-21 00:00:00 John Lindner Just re-read this after a long time, and it is neither as controversial as Potter's latter pieces, nor as it's reputation would have it. It is actually a naturalistic/humanistic retelling of the closing period of Jesus' ministry... It messes with some of the traditional chronology, and portrays Jesus as a man uncertain of his calling and ultimate destiny, but there are some wonderful and perceptive interchanges between Jesus and his disciples and between Jesus and Pilate... Would love to see the BBC recording with Colin Blakely again...
