I got this book for Xmas approx 30 years ago and it disappeared and I never read it - my parents (who I secretly suspect may have been responsible for its disappearance) got me a 2nd hand copy for Christmas again this year. By no means a great work of literature but still well written in a style that reminded me of Douglas Addams, it had me in stitches of laughter. The back story of the Meldrews lost baby was genuinely moving. I can't remember Mrs walboys sexual assault by a gorilla nor the graphic account of Victor coming round from an accidental drug binge to find himself being fellated by a prostitute featuring in the tv show or at least not in the same detail featured in the book - looking back this might have been the reason the book was 'disappeared' from my childhood bookshelves before I got round to reading it.

If you enjoyed the series, 'One Foot in the Grave', you will, hopefully, enjoy the book. The TV series occasionally hinted at tragedy in the Meldrews' lives. I don't think its precise nature was ever made clear (though I may be wrong as it's a while now since the series was on TV). It is identified here. The book is the usual mix of comedy and pathos, and the characters definitely come alive on the page. David Renwick has an amazing imagination. There's nothing new here - just events from the TV show cobbled together, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. However 'unbelievable' Victor's life is, Renwick's genius is in making it completely believable at the same time. It's made me want to revisit the TV series again - which I now will on DVD.
